Yes , I know , I'm a noob . During a conversation I had with a friend the other day we got into a debate and she told me that if you download something from sketchup 3d warehouse and use it to make a mod that it would mess everything up and won't work . So my question here is , was she right or was I correct in telling her that it would work ?

It will work but sketchup is not the recommended modeling program.

It will work but sketchup is not the recommended modeling program. Is that because it causes errors or does something else that could cause problems . What is the recommended program ? I'm very new at this and just now trying to learn how to begin modeling . My choice for SketchUp was because of they way the tutorials were done , slow enough to see and being explained as it's being watched , which for me was way easier than any of the other tuts I've seen so far . Out of all the others I've watched so far , the greater majority hasn't done anything except confuse me more than I already am lol . <===== 60 year old man with bad eye sight and a hard head

The main issue with Sketchup models is the extremely high poly count, because of that you will need to do a ton of poly reduction in Blender or a similar program, which is one of the prefered programs for modeling.

It's because the mesh is ALWAYS flawed when it goes into another modelling program. Sketchup was not intended to be used to make models for games, it was dezined as a cheap way to make buildings and cars and other things, without having an extreme amount of detail. Blender, maya, 3dsmax, Rhino, and probably someothers I can't think of right now are all programs designed to create models for games. Obviously for FS, maya or Blender would be the best things to use, but I use a program called Zmodeler, it's not great, but I had to use it to mod Haulin', and I've been using it for 5 years, so I've gotten pretty good at it.

Good to know before I got too far into it . Which one would you suggest for a beginner and hopefully one of them is similar to Sketchup as far as being user friendly and easy to learn ?

Probably blender, although I have virtually no experience with it, there are tons of videos on youtube.

There are five big problems with the whole Sketchup thing, some of which have been addressed already. But I feel like adding my two cents lol. 1. Most 3D Warehouse models were not created in Sketchup. They were created in Zmod, Maya, or another program. Whoever uploaded them to the 3D Warehouse converted them from that original format, and released them in Sketchup format instead. 2. Sketchup as a program is greatly lacking in many ways, mainly texturing, so when people convert models from Sketchup without retexturing them, the result often looks awful. 3. Sketchup models are often converted to FS by people with little experience in Blender or other middle-man programs necessary to get the model into FS. So instead of cleaning up the model in Blender, they just export it directly to i3d and start in-gaming it. 4. Sketchup models that are created in the program are often overly high-poly given their level of detail, so they are often not worth the hassle of cleanup and poly reduction. 5. Sketchup is not the poor man's Turbosquid. Many people, including me, have at one time thought that the models in 3D Warehouse were useful for FS. The truth is, that is 99% of the time not the case. I have cleaned up a Sketchup train car I found, and will be retexturing it in the future, but the only reason the model is halfway decent is because I know Blender quite well, and know how to reduce polies in a quick and effective manner. So my advice to you as others have shared is use Blender. Blender is free, difficult to learn, but very rewarding once you get it. It takes time to master (I'm not there yet), but even before you get to mastery, you'll be impressing yourself and a whole lot of other people. A polygon is a polygon, and whether you make your models in Zmod, Maya, Sketchup, Blender, 3DS Max, or some other program, a 2000 poly model is still a 2000 poly model. However, it's best to start on a program with more potential for growth and development, and Blender is definitely that program.

Ok thanks , glad I found out about this now . I actually already have Blender intending to use it for sims2 but never got around to it so I guess now is the time . Now my big question is . . . as sketchup has 3d warehouse to get parts from , where would i get parts to use with Blender ?

Now my big question is . . . as sketchup has 3d warehouse to get parts from , where would i get parts to use with Blender ? There really isn't a place, but again, 3D Warehouse isn't really a place to get parts for Sketchup: it's a collection of stuff people have taken from various games and other programs and imported. Someone could have done the same with Blender, but no one has yet. The best way to get stuff for Blender is to make it yourself, and while it may not sound like fun, if you start small and work your way up, you'll get good at the program in a short amount of time. And then you can use your skills to make larger projects or more detailed model edits.
