Hmm. Well, I spend most of my FS time on AEM, FS-UK, here, modhoster, and a few other smaller ones which are, admittedly, the cream of the crop as far as mod sites go. So, perhaps my scope isn't broad enough. I suppose when you get out of those places the quality of the community degrades significantly, which I guess means you are correct.
I wonder how aware Giants are of this and if they could create some "encoding" or "locking" so modders could release their stuff without fear of it being re-edited and released? Why does this seem like such a larger problem for FS than many other games? Even something like a Steam workshop would be an improvement.

The encoding, encrypting and locking of mods has been brought up several times with Giants. They have specifically stated that they will not provide any means for preventing mods from being freely accessed by others. There have been several discussions about this on the german official forums. One of the things which I have noticed when comparing the modding of FS to games like DriverSF, GTA, ARMA, or 18WOS is that the modding tools are all provided for you at purchase and are made to simplify the modding process. What other game does the game developer give you all the tools to alter their game, including permission to reverse engineer their work. Not only that but they provide assistance to us when we ask for it on their forums, script documentations, modding tutorials, plugins to open source software, etc.
While this is an awesome thing for the developer to do it also creates issues where not only the good, dedicated, and determined modders and gamers can create mods, everyone can create mods good, bad or ugly. You now have modding open to all whims and a fairly simple straight forward process that is easily learned. This does not mean that the people who learn these processes will have or take the time to be good at making these mods. It also means that it is much easier to take not only the download which seems to happen with all games, but also the mod itself and claim it as ones work even if they didn't have anything to do with the original content. This ease in editing also creates a false sense of value as anyone can churn out 100 poor edits in a short period of time making it appear that new mods can be easily created with little effort. These high volume mods also take away from the value of the properly created, edited, or new mods, because the community shows the same value for a mod which took someone 2 hrs to completely foulup and reupload as a mod which took 128 hrs of modeling, 24 hrs of texturing, 16 hrs of scripting, and 256 hrs of testing.
Until we can demonstrate to the community the true value of the individuals, modders, modelers, scripters, reskinners, and the list goes on and on, there really isn't any real hope. We can only press on and pray that what goes around comes around for those that don't.

I think that's the most accurate representation of what's happening. People don't realize how hard it is do make quality mods, and think that everythings really easy and anyone who doesn't release things is stingy.

If the problem is not enough people speaking out, then why didn't we get more signatures on that petition? Nobody had to say anything, just sign it. I hate to be so blunt, but I'm sorry, you're wrong. There is an overwhelming gap between those who truely care about the community and the modders who made it, and those who only care about mods. Those of us that want it better for everyone are severely outnumbered and it's only going to get worse. We need a place where only those who really want it better will be allowed, and that's what we're trying to do here. We don't want people who just want mods, we want people to contribute mods and ask for help, learn to mod, etc. here. That's why we're here. If it means we have to run a few people off, that's fine by me, you can't change everyone's mind. According to the petition, only 453 people (out of approximately 200,000 accounts on the two forums I've posted on and an additional 5,000 likes or so on the FB pages it's posted on) care about Modhub users posting their filthy ideas in my name and the names of others within the community. That amounts to about 2/10s of a percent. Nuff said.

I'm signing here because I want the good modders to be able to release their mods and know that they are safe and secure. That is my logic. I don't like this new feeling in the community that any one can edit whatever they want until it is no longer recognizable. I have tried modding and it takes some serious effort if you want a good result. My computer failed to run GE so all I can do is hope that there will be a change in the community with more respect for not just modders, but for everyone
